I was brought up Christian but in my adult life I’ve learned on my own to simply respect other religions, whether I agree with their beliefs or not. The dedication towards someone or something of a higher power can be such a beautiful thing — which is what made visiting Big Buddha an enlightening experience.
“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.”
This giant marble statue majestically sits atop mount Nagakerd overlooking Phuket Town and Karon. The view is breathtaking, especially on a clear day. We took a cab to get here but you can also rent scooters, although the road is a bit steep and windy (lots of turns).
As a respect to the religion, women must wear clothing that cover below the knee. But don’t fret if you show up with shorts or a skirt on — There’s a lady stationed at the base of the entrance that lend you a cover up just like I was wearing. Just be mindful of what you’re wearing like no crop tops, strapless or spaghetti straps, etc.
Entrance is FREE and open daily from 6am – 7pm. I suggest going early in the morning or late afternoon when the sun isn’t too strong and less of a crowd. We went around 3pm and were lucky enough to witness a worship service led by monks.
Off to the side a blessing ritual was taking place. Curious and inclined, I approached the monk. He chanted something then splashed holy water on my head. After awkwardly opening my eyes, he tied a handmade braided bracelet around my left wrist, which I still wear. I can’t say that I felt differently after but it made for a somewhat authentic experience being in the presence of devote followers. Again, respect.
There was still some construction in the surrounding areas and inside, but there are a few other statues surrounding Big Buddha, some covered in gold, that you can see. Whether or not you’re religious, this place was a great spot to catch a panoramic view of the city and also learn something new. We didn’t stay long but it was worth the visit!
Oh! There’s a vendor as your walking back down that sells fresh coconut ice cream that is delicious and refreshing!
